THORNTON - James L. "Jim" Demeritt, 67, died Feb. 16, 2016, at the Hospice House in Concord after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born Aug. 6, 1948, in Exeter, son of Kathleen (Eaton) Demeritt and the late George L. Demeritt.

Jim grew up in Brentwood. He went to live with his grandparents in Durham in his teen years and later graduated from Oyster River High School. Jim served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam era. Throughout his entire working career, Jim was employed as a heavy equipment operator. His last employment was for Waterville Estates. Jim loved residing in Thornton for the last 19 years. He was formerly of Epping for six years and Raymond for 18 years. Jim was active in town affairs and was a former selectman in both Thornton and Raymond. He also served on other various town committees as well.

Mr. Demeritt loved dogs and always owned a dog. He was a person who appreciated the outdoors and enjoyed deer hunting.

He is survived by his two sons, David Demeritt and Jason Demeritt; his mother, Kathleen Demeritt; his brothers, Dennis Demeritt, Jeffrey Demeritt and Duane Demeritt; and several nieces and nephews.
