| HOWARD CLEVELAND L. HOWARD, III
Cleveland L. Howard, III "aka Howie Howard" died peacefully at home in Gaithersburg, MD on November 5, 2014 from brain cancer. The youngest child of Cleveland Howard, Jr. and Ethyl L. (Hall) Howard, he was born in Niskayuna, NY on October 6, 1968. He attended elementary and high school in Durham, NH through the age of 16 and then transferred to Kimball Union Academy (KUA) in Meriden, NH, where he received his high school diploma in 1987. He lettered in soccer, ice hockey and track while at KUA. He then attended the University of New Hampshire (UNH), where he majored in Communications, minored in Spanish, and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1991. While at UNH, he played on the men's varsity soccer team as co-captain both his junior and senior years, and in the intramural ice hockey league. He was very involved with the UNH Freshman Camp program and he was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity.
After graduating from UNH, he moved to Washington, DC with several college buddies. He was then hired to work for adidas America in sales, based out of southern New Jersey. As his territory expanded he moved to Gaithersburg, MD and returned to the "metro DC" area that he loved. Fourteen years after joining adidas America, he moved on to an Account Executive position at Timberland where he remained for 5 years before returning to athletic footwear and apparel sales with ASICS America in 2013.
Cleveland made his home in the greater Rockville / Gaithersburg area for the past 17 years, where he started his family. He volunteered with the Montgomery Youth Hockey Association (MYHA), coaching or assisting teams every year since his oldest daughter started participating in 2007. Both of his daughters share his love of sports. They play soccer and ice hockey, are black belts in Tae Kwon Do, and proudly wear their Patriots or Bruins jerseys while watching games with their father. He loved working with children and he was a strong advocate of teamwork and good sportsmanship. In the 2013-2014 season, he was recognized by MYHA as "Coach of the Year". He kept his own hockey skills fresh by participating on the DC Grizzlies, a Hockey North America adult hockey team, which won the summer championship in 2010. He also has assisted with youth soccer programs, volunteered at his daughters' elementary school, participated in numerous charity bike rides and road races, and volunteered in several community service events.
He is survived by his two daughters, Zene Ethyl Howard and Zoe Thi Howard, their mother Nga "Luna' Howard, his sister Glendowlyn F.
