KEY LARGO, Fla. — Christopher Wright Potter, formerly of Durham, died peacefully at Mariners Key Largo Hospital in Taviner, Fla., Feb. 11, 2006.
Born April 14,1964, in Franklin, he grew up on the Oyster River in Durham, where he closely watched the river environment and shared his observations with friends and neighbors. He attended Oyster River schools and played on the ORHS varsity hockey team.
He had lived in recent years primarily in the Florida Keys, where he passed his PADI master's SCUBA course and worked on the local fishing fleets and a Bimini cruise line. He later passed the higher rank PADI SCUBA instructor certification and worked on Captain Slate's fleet, featured on NOVA. He returned briefly to New England working on Cape Cod, designing outdoor koi fish ponds, after which he returned to the Keys, which he always considered to be his spiritual home. He volunteered at the Wildlife Bird Sanctuary building raptor habitats and assisting in the care of the birds.
His father, UNH Professor Hugh Potter, predeceased him.
He is survived by his mother, Jean Wright Potter, formerly of Durham and currently living in western Massachusetts; an aunt, Eleanor Wright, of Florida, and two cousins, Ruth Weber Heyrend and Dee Weber Burdin.
