LAND O'LAKES - David Benn Raynes, 72, of Land O’ Lakes, FL, died on Sunday, September 8, 2024, with his loving wife, Rosemary, at his side. He was born in Dover, NH, on November 15, 1951, to Paul and Dorothy Raynes. While he lived most of his life in Madbury, NH, his career and love of travel took him all over the World.
David grew up on a farm, which was a foundation for his hard work ethic later in life. His childhood was filled with selling and delivering eggs and working at the Old Stage Campground, which his family had built and managed. He graduated from Oyster River High School in 1970 and Concord Technical College in 1972 with an Associate's Degree in Electrical Engineering. He enjoyed riding and fixing motorcycles, being a ham radio operator, refurbishing sports cars, directing plays, skiing with his children, boating, and cooking for his friends and family.
David first met Rosemary at the Campground while she was visiting his sister. David and Rosemary got to know each other when they worked together at Huddleston Hall at the University of New Hampshire. They were married on March 7, 1970. Their adventures over the following 54 years contributed to their happy marriage.
David started working as a television engineer at NH Public Television in 1972 when it was based in the MUB at UNH. He enjoyed working live events with their mobile production truck, a converted Winnebago nicknamed The Whale. While at NHPTV, he won many awards, including his first regional Emmy for “The Franco Files.” He freelanced as a Video Engineer at sporting events around New England for many years. He worked his first of six Olympics in Seoul, Korea, in 1988 for NBC. In 1996, he started working as Graphics Maintenance during the NFL season for CBS Sports. He started and managed a system integration company called Little Bay Broadcast Services for over 20 years. In 2022, he was handed his last TV credential and BNC barrel when he retired from CBS Sports. That same year, he was awarded a national Emmy for Super Bowl LV with CBS Sports. In 2023, he retired from working day to day.
David joined the Madbury Fire Department in 1978 and was one of the driving forces behind the formation of the Madbury FAST Squad. He served as a Firefighter/EMT and many years as a Captain on the Madbury Fire Department. He was passionate about training and mentoring new firefighters and officers. His work in television and his love of the fire service came together when he worked with the NH Forest Rangers to create an award-winning commercial with Smokey Bear. His fundraising, including his world-famous Madbury Day Food Auction, contributed to purchasing much-needed emergency equipment for the department.
David is survived by his wife, Rosemary Carlisle Raynes, his daughter Diane Schiavo and her husband Phil of Barrington, NH, his son Brian Raynes and his wife Lindsay, his older brother Paul (Mac) Raynes Jr and his wife Robbie of Tallahassee, FL, his sister Caryl Sullivan and her husband Jack of Nashua, NH, and his younger brother Stephen Raynes and his wife Patty of Madbury, NH. Grandchildren: Stephanie Schiavo and fiancé Mike Kisko, Cameron Schiavo and fiancé Missy Jones, and Eva Raynes. He is predeceased by his parents, Paul Sr. and Dorothy (Head) Raynes.
