Allan E. Chamberlin

BOWLING GREEN - Allan E. Chamberlin, 73, of Bowling Green died peacefully on January 21, 2025 at The Willows at Bowling Green after battling Alzheimer’s for several years. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and brother. He leaves behind his wife of 44 years, Debbie, his sons Chris (wife Amy) of Bowling Green and Mark (wife Kathleen) of Lyndhurst, and five special grandsons, Stone, Grady, Reid, Quinn and Rory. He is also survived by his sister, Cathy Foutz of Williston, VT, his brother, Dave of Evergreen, CO; brothers-in-law Brad Schamp (wife Susan), Archdale, NC and Bill Schamp, Clearwater, FL; and “special cousin” Karen Ireland (husband Bob) and Karen’s sister, Zacki, all of Hillsborough, NC. He is also survived by many nephews, nieces and cousins.

He was predeceased by his son Jeff, his brother Jay, and his parents Jim and Nell Chamberlin of Durham, New Hampshire.

Allan graduated from the University of New Hampshire in 1974 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree with an emphasis in Sports Writing. He began his career as the Assistant Sports Information Director at UNH. He moved to Bowling Green in 1979 to become the Sports Information Director at BGSU. He went on to serve in that role with the Mid-American Conference from 1983-1991. He went back to school at BGSU to take accounting classes and was awarded his CPA in 1998. He worked at several accounting firms in the Findlay/Toledo/Bowling Green area, ending his career at S&S CPA, Inc. in 2022.

Still an avid college sports fan, Allan was the official scorer for many years for the BGSU Women’s basketball team. In the fall you could find him working in the BGSU football press box until his illness forced him to step down last fall. Allan was an accomplished golfer, winning the NH State Championship as a young man. He continued weekly golf outings with long-time friends until this past fall. Early on he was an avid runner until knee problems forced him to became a walker. He averaged 25 to 30 miles a week. Calendar logs he kept for 2022 and 2023 say he walked over 1200 miles each year. People often saw him walking around BG through City Park, Simpson Garden Park, and Wintergarden Park. During the winter months, you would find him working on a 1000-piece White Mountain puzzle or challenging himself to the most difficult Sudoku puzzles.

Allan was either a head coach or an assistant coach when his sons played T-Ball, PeeWee, and Junior baseball. When Mark ran cross-country and track in junior high and high school, Allan was there with his stopwatch, always willing to help the coaches with whatever needed to be done. This continued even after Mark graduated.

Allan loved his role of Grampa to his five grandsons. He enjoyed watching their sports activities, whether it was baseball, basketball, track, cross country, football or swimming. Two of his grandsons live in BG, but three live in Cleveland so he made the monthly drive there for nearly 15 years.

He was active in Kiwanis, always looking forward to the weekly meetings, ringing the bells at Christmas, and the pancake breakfasts. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, where he served as Treasurer for many years. He was also one of the founding members of the FUMC Investment Club.

He was an avid Ohio State fan. The night before he passed, he was wrapped in his Ohio State blanket with the Ohio State/Notre Dame game on TV. The nurses said that when the game was over, they made sure to tell him that Ohio State won!

Allan and Debbie enjoyed many trips to Florida and North Carolina over the years, welcoming friends and family to join them. Other memorable trips included a 3-week trip through the national parks, 3 weeks on the Hawaiian Islands, and a week in Sedona, AZ. Extended family trips to the beaches of North Carolina and Florida created lasting memories. When his parents were living, they traveled to New Hampshire every August so the whole family could be together.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial gifts be made to BGSU Women’s Basketball, First United Methodist Church, or to purchase a memorial bench in Simpson Garden Park.

The family would like to extend its thanks to the staff at The Willows at Bowling Green for their kind and compassionate care. The family also appreciates the gentle and caring support they received from Care 360. The family extends a special thank you to Cheryl and Kathy at Hagemeyer Fine Photography for taking family photos shortly before Allan’s passing. The photos will be a beautiful memory for our family. Their kindness and compassion will always be remembered.
